- 1. Protect the privacy of your social security number.
Never carry your social security card in your wallet or purse. When you dispose of documents containing your social security number, always shred or otherwise destroy them.
- 2. Do not sign the back of your credit cards.
Instead, write "PHOTO ID REQUIRED", "CHECK ID" or "SEE ID". Note, however, that some establishments will not accept unsigned credit cards. This step provides added protection when using your card at a business that does not regularly check photo IDs, a practice that is becoming more common and is required by law in some jurisdictions.
