The Top 10 Boston Sports Stories Edit

No. 10. The Red Sox losing the 1986 World Series to the New York Mets

Very Sorry, Bill, but the story of the 1986 World Series loss is forever engrained in the Red Sox Nation. On October 25, 1986, with the Sox leading the Mets 3-2 in Game 6 of the best-of-7 series, the game was tied in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Sox took a two-run lead in the top of the tenth, but the Mets come back to tie on a wild pitch by pitcher Bob Stanley. Mookie Wilson of the Mets fouled off several pitches before hitting a ground ball to Bill Buckner at first base. The ball took a deadening bounce on the dirt and rolled under Buckner's glove, through his legs, and into right field, allowing Mets' Ray Knight to score the winning run from second base. The Mets victory, forced a seventh game, which was played two nights later and won by the Mets. It was the curse, some thought, or was it...[1]

No. 9. Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding vie for the Gold in Women's Figure Skating, 1994 Olympics

Incredibly, one month before the '94 Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway began, Tonya Harding's ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly hired Shane Stant to club fellow U.S. female figure skater Nancy Kerrigan, of Stoneham, Mass. in the knee. The ensuing media coverage was saturated and sensational. In the end Kerrigan went on to win the silver medal, behind Oksana Baiul of the Ukraine. Harding finished 8th and was banned from competitive figure skating by the U.S. Figure Skating Association for life.

No. 3. doug flutie hail mary back in the 80's

he through it so far! and he's so little.

No. 2. The Dynasty

4 Years...3 Championships...One Improbable Run. Starting in 2001, with the Tuck Rule Game, the New England Patriots exorcised decades of futility. Defeating the Raiders, 16-13, then the Steelers 21-17, they recorded one of the biggest upsets in sports history, beating the heavily favored St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI, 20-17, on a last-second field goal by Adam Vinatieri. In 2003, the Patriots rattled of a 14-2 record, best in the NFL, steamrolling Co-MVPs Steve McNair and Peyton Manning en route to a last-second Vinateri field goal victory in Super Bowl XXXVIII over the Carolina Panthers. They repeated the next year, defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 24-21 in Super Bowl XXIX, to become the modern-day dynasty of the NFL. The dynasty is still not over, either, as the Patriots continue to maintain a standing as one of the NFL's top franchises. Championships aside, this is the golden age of the Patriots, and the establishment of the new sports TEAM dynasty.

Red Sox ring

No. 1 & the Sweetest. The Red Sox win the 2004 World Series in baseball!

Not only a great Boston story, but for the Red Sox Nation and all of baseball! The American League pennant race, with Red Sox vs. NY Yankees, was the ultimate heart thumper. Red Sox were down 0-3 games in the pennant and came back to win the series 4-3. Then went on to a 4-0 sweep of the 2004 World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals, the final win ending during a total lunar eclipse.

To Ortiz, Schilling, Ramírez, Bellhorn, Wakefield, Lowe, Millar, Varitek, Roberts and turned Yankee-coat Damon, to all the team: Thank you!
